I did my first motor swap, and it was with a Harbor Freight engine

The 5 hp Tecumseh has been losing power over the past year (it’s 22 years old) so I figured it was time to replace it. Could not move snow in anything above 1st gear, and even then it was bogging down (yes it was jetted correctly)

Did a bunch of research, found I could replace it with a 7 hp Snow King, which is basically a Tecumseh replica for $270 delivered. But I have read A LOT of reviews about the Predator 6.5 hp engine that Harbor Freight sells and discovered it is hard to find negative reviews for it. Everyone had great things to say about it. It’s basically a Honda clone engine, which my friend who has an actual Honda snowblower verified, they look identical. So I pulled the trigger, had a HF engine delivered to my house in 1 weeks time for $133, including a 2 year warranty.

2 Hours later the motor swap was complete, and it was as close to a bolt on replacement as you can make it. Crankshaft for the pulleys was the same height, mounting holes were the same location, the only thing I had to do was move the chute handle down lower so it didn’t hit the engine.

Tried it out in the deep ice chunks/snow mix in our street that was about 10 inches deep, and this thing plowed through it in 4th gear without ever dipping in RPMs. Needless to say I am impressed with it and was 100% worth it.

I need tracks for my snowblower. The solid rubber tires it has have the knobs all worn off so I DIY studded the tires with screws.

Only thing I read was people saying they went up one jet size on the carb and they run better, I’ll likely do that as well.

Tracks are amazing. I can put it in 6th gear, pick the bucket up and it’ll just power through and over deep snow that’s built up. I’ve looked at replacing them, but since they were only made like this for a few years, they’re about $90 for a pair.

I think** they do make kits you can convert your tire snowblower over to tracks though

You have inspired me to refurbish my forlorn 1970-something Craftsman snowblower. Harbor Freight is the best!

Tracks on a snowblower are the best thing ever. Ever. Wish my current one had them.

They still make them, but be prepared to spend north of $1000

Therein lies the most ridiculous of problems. $1k is a lot of Fiat parts...

I’ve been tempted by those engines, especially when they’re really cheep. I’m not sure what I’d do with them though.

You could turn the fiat into a snowblower at that kinda of money!

Seeing as my repies are kinja’d and they’ve taken away my lifeline (annotations) I’ll reply here.

If I ever got a Peel P50 the first thing I’d do would be to go to Princess Auto and do an engine swap.
